Hamilton College students take action against hunger with the Food Rescue Hero app. A dedicated group of college students is tackling food insecurity in the community through an innovative partnership, leveraging technology and volunteer effort to ensure all leftover dining food doesn’t go to waste.
The student volunteer group, “Action Against Hunger”, is making a tangible difference by utilizing the Food Rescue Hero App ro redistribute frozen leftover meals from the Hamilton College Dining Hall to local organizations serving those in need.
Under the leadership of the its officers, Patrick Ferrare and Samantha Tyska, the group coordinates weekly deliveries to two local community kitchens. “It is rewarding to see this partnership come to life,: said Patrick Ferrare, “Using the Food Rescue Hero App makes the logistics of connecting surplus food with people who need it incredibly efficient. Every tray we deliver are meals that won’t go wasted, and a hungry person fed”
The program is a powerful example of how student initiative, combined with organizational partnership, can create a sustainable solution for food waste and hunger relief. Action Against Hunger has established a reliable schedule to suppor tow vital community meal sites: Deliveries are made to Mother Marianne’s Westside Soup Kitchen on Mondays; and frozen meal trays are dropped off at the Hope House on Thursdays. These regular contributions ensure that the dining hall’s frozen leftovers are quickly and safely redirected to individuals who need them most.
The commitment of the Action Against Hunger volunteers showcases the profound impact students can have when they mobilize to address pressing social issues right in their backyard.
