Let’s get ready for your first Food Rescue!

Thank you for joining ResQ2Feed Oneida County. We want you to feel excited and prepared to volunteer with us, so we’ve added the following video and FAQ’s to help you prepare for your first food rescue!

Volunteer FAQs

A Food Rescue is the pick-up and delivery of food donations from a food donor to a nonprofit partner agency.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate in our Food Rescue program. However, the driver must have a valid driver’s license and valid vehicle insurance.

ResQ2Feed Oneida County volunteers provide the last-mile transportation for surplus food donations. With our Food Rescue Hero app, you can volunteer as much or as little as you’d like. You can claim a weekly rescue that allows you to volunteer every week (same time, same place!); or you can claim a one-time rescue that works with your schedule. The Food Rescue Hero app can be downloaded  through the Apple store and Google Play. After downloading the app, scroll down the location drop down menu and select Utica-Rome to register as a volunteer for our program.

Once you register in the app and select your time availabilities, you will have access to food rescues available in your area. To learn more about a particular rescue, click on a rescue icon on the map and then click “view rescue.” You will see the food rescue start time, which is always given as a 1 hour window of time to pick-up the food donation; and then you can swipe the small grey arrow upwards to learn more about the rescue, including details such as food donor and community partner location.  If you’re interested in doing the food rescue, claim it!

Weekly rescues occur on the same day, time, frequency (i.e. every Monday at 10 am and on the same route (donor and non-profit partner.) If you claim a weekly rescue as a volunteer, you can always request a sub if something comes up and you aren’t able to make it.

One-time rescues or pop-up rescues occur on an as needed basis. These are not at pre-determined days and times. When you claim a one-time rescue, you’re only committing your time for that one rescue only. You can always check the app for more rescues.

You are free to volunteer as often or as little as you would like. If you don’t want to commit to a set schedule, you can claim a one-time or pop-up rescue. If you would like a set schedule, then weekly rescues are the right fit for you. You can also request a sub if you can’t complete a rescue.

No, a large vehicle is not required to participate in our Food Rescue Program. The App will indicate the volume of each food donation to help ensure your vehicle has the capacity to hold the donation.
